RMB recently revealed its capability and appetite to invest in Botswana’s renewable energy strategy at the recently ended 2nd Renewable Energy and Power Infrastructure Investors Conference, held at the GICC.

peaking at the conference, RMB’s Senior Transactor Mr. Tiago Almeida said “RMB has experience in structuring and financing renewable energy projects across Africa. Our experienced and multi-disciplinary team provides funding solutions across all key sectors, including: public-privatepartnerships, conventional power, renewable energy, road, rail, ports, water, telecommunications, industrial facilities and manufacturing facilities.”

This comes at a time when the Government of Botswana is considering renewable energy as an alternative energy resource to counter the increasing cost and unreliability of power from Eskom in South Africa. Moreover, Botswana’s high number of clear days in a year, provides an excellent solar resource and this could provide a meaningful contribution to Botswana’s energy demands. In tapping in to this resource and realizing the country’s, renewable energy strategy, the Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) in 2017 decided to start a program to procure 100MW of solar energy and exploit the plentiful natural resource.

Globally, Solar power solutions have become far more affordable and commercially viable over the past few years and many issues that plagued solar have also been resolved, thereby providing a great opportunity for investment in the sector. RMB therefore sees great potential in forging strategic partnerships with the Government of Botswana and investors to leverage on renewable energy investment to achieve sustainable energy source for thousands of homes.

The RMB team draws great experience from the pivotal role they played in South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Programme, and this positions them well to assist in moving Botswana’s renewable energy Programme forward.
