BOTSWANA'S COMMITMENT TO RENEWABLE ENERGY

Acting Co-Director of RMB in Botswana Harriet Mlalazi was in conversation with Hon. Lefhoko M. Moagi, Botswana’s Minister of Minerals and Energy, at the recent Africa Mining Indaba in Cape Town.

The discussion centered around Botswana’s commitment to renewable energy and the role financial institutions could play in financing infrastructure, as well as offering transactional advisory services to assist government in achieving its clean energy objectives.

Botswana has an Integrated Resource Plan for electricity generation that seeks to have more than 15% electricity generated through renewable sources, with the objective to reduce emissions. Projects amounting to more that 250MW have been awarded for renewable energy production across the country. This will assist with closing the power security gap and increased export opportunities.

It was clear from the conversation that an integrated communication plan is needed to create ESG awareness and understanding.
